You are the activity coordinator for your local sports centre. You read an article criticizing the centre in the local newspaper. Write a letter to the editor correcting the inaccuracies.
Dear Editor,
As coordinator of sports and leisure activities for the Woodward Sports
Centre, I feel that I must point out several inaccuracies in your recent article.
"Sports Centre Troubles"
I was distressed by your implication that there have been several injuries as a result of our staff's inadequate training. Our instructors are required to have a degree in physical education and at least five years of previous work experience. Furthermore, there has been only one injury since the opening of the Centre. As this was a boy who fell off his bicycle on his way to the Centre, we can hardly be held responsible.
Another criticism expressed in your article, was that the high school basketball team did not have sufficient time on the basketball court.
This problem came to our attention, during our first month. We immediately arranged a meeting with the coach and reorganized the schedule to accommodate the team's needs.
After reading your article, we carried out a survey among parents of children who use our facilities. While it is true that approximately 10% of the parents expressed some dissatisfaction, according to survey results, the majority are very satisfied with our services.
With regard to being more aware of parents' opinions, I would like to point out that we have monthly meetings where parents can express their concerns and offer their suggestions for improvement. Many of these suggestions have been implemented.
We trust that you will publish this letter so that your readers will get a more accurate picture of the Woodward Sports Centre and its activities.

Yours sincerely,
D. Preston

Future schools with present tools

There's no need to reinvent education in order to improve our schools. We simply have to make better use of the resources that we already have. One example is the community around us. Another is technology, which could be developed into a powerful educational tool.
The community surrounding the school, already exists, but how can we exploit it? For one thing parents have a lot to teach us - either interesting professions to tell us about, or life experiences we can learn from. In addition, there are local industries which will probably employ some of the students in the future. How about having representatives, from these industries explain how their companies work and what employment opportunities they can offer after graduation?
Computers are another resource already present in plenty of schools. But are they being used to the best advantage of the students and teachers? It's easy to imagine classrooms where computers with Internet access are a regular feature. Students could work with class material on an Internet site that also has answers, so that they would be able to work at their own pace, and check themselves on-line. This would free teachers to devote more time to students  who are having trouble.
To sum up, I'd like to see schools of the future make better use of the resources and tools we have at hand, such as people in the community and computer technology.
I think  these changes would go a long way to creating a better learning  environment, and they should be quite easy to implement.

State your opinion about a healthy lifestyle.

What are the keys to such a lifestyle?
Nowadays we are all keen on being healthy. But what is actually involved in maintaining a healthy lifestyle?  To my mind, there are two main ingredients: exercise and sensible diet.
For me, the most important factor for a healthy future is exercise. Without exercise, we are inviting trouble. Take "couch potatoes," for example, who just sit in front of the television all day eating junk food and never do anything to look after their bodies. They end up fat and unhealthy, their arteries full of cholesterol. They're just asking to die young from a heart attack. We've all got a bit of the "couch potato" in us, but I believe that we must try to exercise as often as we can. No matter how busy we are with school or work, we can still find two or three times a week to enjoy recreational sports, go to a gym for aerobics or even go for a walk with some friends. After all, it's important that we do something to get our hearts pumping, burn off those extra calories and keep our stress levels down.
The second most vital ingredient for a healthy lifestyle, in my opinion is to eat sensibly. When it comes to diet, a lot of people don't care enough about their food. As a result they eat too much fast food and other non-nutritious junk foods and not enough fresh fruit and vegetables. It wouldn't hurt us to review our eating habits, and strive for a more balanced, low-fat, high-fiber diet. We could also try to eat more fish and poultry, thereby cutting down on our intake of red meat, which is not only high in fat but also loaded with hormones.
To sum up, we have everything to gain by exercising and eating more sensibly. As the old saying goes, "Prevention is better than cure," and exercising and eating sensibly are the best forms of prevention I know.

Have the gifts you were given taught you anything about giving gifts?

Nowadays we give gifts on so many occasions that many people look on gift-giving as just another boring routine. But does it have to be that way? Has gift giving really lost its meaning? My experiences on two different occasions tell me that it depends on the gift-giver and the thought behind the gift.
One of the best gifts I've ever received was my first bicycle. I was about to start high school and my parents had wanted to buy me something that would keep me fit and divert me from studying. Since we lived in a scenic area, they decided on a bicycle. What a perfect gift!  Not only did it allow me to spend many beautiful weekends relaxing after a hard week of studying, but it also opened up friendships with children who shared my interest in exploring the area. Every time we cycled off, I thought of my parents with great fondness.
But even those who are closest to you can get it wrong sometimes. I'll never forget my fifth birthday. The doorbell rang and there was my grandmother, smiling brightly as she handed me a beautifully wrapped box. I was sure it was the doll that I'd been telling her about for weeks ... , but when I tore open the wrapping, all I found was a blanket that she had made for my dowry! Some might say, "Never mind. It's the thought that counts," but try telling that to a very disappointed five-year-old.
To sum up, we can see from these experiences that when giving a gift, it's important to consider the taste and feelings of the person receiving it. To my mind, a gift is most meaningful when it is chosen with care and reflects your true feelings for the other person. The right gift can strengthen your relationship with a person, but the wrong one may sour it forever. So next time you're out hunting for a gift, remember: It isn't just the thought that counts, but the right thought for the right person.

In your opinion, what inventions or technological developments after last century have had the
most dramatic impact in modern life? Give reasons for your choices.

The 20th century spawned a vast number of new inventions, many of which, have had a great impact on our lives. The two that have had the most dramatic effect, in my opinion, are the jet and the television.
I choose the jet because it has dramatically cut the time it takes to travel from place to place. This has had many advantages for both business travelers and tourists. For starters, both groups have gained by being able to reach their destinations, more quickly and in greater comfort. Secondly, business travelers can now meet their overseas clients and counterparts face to face, rather than having to communicate through more impersonal means such as telephone, letter, fax and email. Finally, the jet has placed thousands of far-away destinations within the reach of average tourists, enabling them to see people and places they had previously only read about or seen on TV. Although jets have been criticized for using too much fuel and polluting the atmosphere, there is no question that they have had a major positive influence on our lives.
Television has had an even more dramatic impact, on our daily lives though not necessarily for the better.
Before the invention of television, families used to amuse themselves by talking, reading to each other, playing games, singing and just generally communicating. Nowadays all that has been replaced by television watching, and any attempt to communicate, is met with "Not now, I'm watching something!" It has also been said that violence on television triggers violence in society. To be fair, though, the disadvantages must be balanced against the fact that television has revolutionized our lives by making us infinitely more aware of the world, around us through documentaries and news broadcasts with international content.
In conclusion, despite the fact  that neither the gas-guzzling, air-polluting jet nor the conversation-destroying, violence-provoking TV have had a totally positive effect on our lives, they are still from my point of view -the inventions which have had the most dramatic impact on modern life.
